Judo

Judo is a grappling sport.  Success in Judo is achieved by using an opponent’s weight and momentum against him or her, disrupting their balance to win.  The Judo player, or Judoka, uses throws, grappling, and pinning movements.

The word Judo is Japanese for “gentle way”.  Founded in 1882 by Dr. Jigoro Kano, Judo is a refined version of the ancient martial art of Jujitsu.  However, any dangerous holds and blows have been excluded.  Today, Judo is an Olympic sport practiced throughout the world.

In addition to the aggressive competition seen in the Olympics, the Welcome Mat also offers instruction in kata (forms) competition.  In kata, partners work together using the same judo techniques to perform a preprogrammed series of moves.  They are judged on precision and accuracy.

Through Judo training, you can gain self-confidence, coordination, and stamina in a fun, safe environment.
